Mike Hulett

President of Adversity VBC, Mike Hulett is a USA Volleyball CAP Level 5 accredited coach who has served on the Great Lakes Region’s Board of Directors for 15 years as well as working with the Boys Committee of USA Volleyball.

Mike served as the Head Coach of the Men’s Paralympic Sitting Volleyball Teams from 1996 (Atlanta) through 2000 (Sydney) before beginning the Women’s program assisted by Denise Van de Walle of Bowling Green State University. They lead a very young team to the Bronze medal in Athens in 2004, truly shocking the volleyball world. Hulett was named the 2004 US Olympic Committee’s Paralympic Coach of the Year. At the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing China, Hulett and Van de Walle led the team to the silver medal. Over all Hulett, coached teams have won the only Paralympic Medals in volleyball.

Hulett has been an IMPACT clinician for more than 15 years, being named the Clinician of the Year in 1997. Awarded the George J. Fisher award by USA Volleyball for twenty years of service in 2001, he continues to be active in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) . In 2012, Hulett received the George “Friar” Friarmood award, USA Volleyball’s most prestigious award.

Kyle Masterson

Kyle is the head Boys Director of Adversity and is a CAP I certified coach. He played club at Adversity until 2003 when he graduated from Barrington High School where he ended his senior season with over 500 kills. He was named to Volleyball Magazine ‘Fab 50 List’ in 2003 and received a scholarship to Penn State University. Kyle played at Penn State from 2003 – 2008 and helped Penn State win the NCAA championship in 2008.

Professionally, Kyle played 5 years in Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, Israel, and Finland. He was the #1 middle blocker in points in Sweden, Denmark and Israel. His team in Denmark, BM Marienlyst, won the Danish Cup and Danish League Championship. His team in Finland, Raisio Loimu, played in CEV and Challenge Cup. Kyle has 4 medals in USA/PVL National Championship, three silver and one gold.  Kyle also has a silver medal in the USA Men’s Open Division.  He has the distinct honor of scoring the first point in the PVL league.

Kyle has helped several Boys Open teams qualify, and had his 2016 girls team qualify for Open at Nationals as well.

Ben Formica

   Ben Formica will be joining us as an Assistant Director.  Ben has coached here for 4 years, leading teams to the Open Division each of the last 2 years. Ben played at Libertyville High School and Marquette University. Ben is a CAP Level 2 Coach
